What could have been a better end to the year 2013 than playing at a amazingly organized Escape Countdown Festival. A build up to the popular Escape Festival, Countdown was no less. Organized at the sprawling Tarudhan Valley Golf Resorts in Manesar (just about a 20 minute drive from Gurgaon Toll), three stages were set for the carnival – Skinner Stage (Rock/Blues/Jazz), Vibe Stage (Electronic and Dance Music), and Boiler Stage.
First up on the Skinner Stage was Prateek Kuhad, a singer-songwriter from New Delhi. Accompanied by Nikhil Vasudevan on drums, he played a bunch of nice and mellow songs to set the tone for the evening, which was awfully cold and windy.
After a short and sweet set by Prateek, we took the stage and tried to turn on the heat with our edgy, progressive Hindi Rock music. It took a while to get people swinging, but with a couple of songs into the set, we had the audience grooving to our songs. Well, no set is really complete without technical difficulties, and we had our share as well – but all in all, an absolutely fun night. We played 8 originals from our debut album, ‘Khoj’ and 5 cover songs before getting off the stage and diving into the after party 🙂
Next up on the Skinners Stage at the Escape Countdown Festival were Rusty Nails, a jazz/blues band from Nepal. We were staying together at the villa and we met them a few hours before the show. We were quite surprised to know when they mentioned that they’ve been playing for 28 years and we hadn’t heard of them. But, man oh man – when they took the stage, we were just blown away. For a three piece band playing eclectic jazz rock/blues and fusion – they sounded absolutely amazing and full. It was a pleasure hearing some very neat and mature guitar playing, fused with really tight bass and drums grooves. Rusty Nails played a good long set and well, we really enjoyed their set.
Last band of the evening, Ska Vengers took stage after Rusty Nail and we quickly grabbed some amazing dinner in the break. We’d heard so much about these guys, but never actually heard them play. And wow, didn’t the night just get even better? They were playing without their guitar player and the horn section, and watching them for the first time, we couldn’t even imagine where a guitar player or the horn section would fit in. Or, well if it did – how more awesome could it get? Playing some really energetic, groovy ska music fused with electro, jazz, and punk rhythms, Ska Vengers were the pick of the night for us. Such groove, much tight – so WOW 🙂
As we said, 2014 couldn’t have started on a better note. We’d like to thank the organizing team at Escape Countdown Festival for having us play at this great event and the amazing hospitality.
